Snowdrift Can Kill: What You Must Clear Before Starting the Engine

The Ministry of Emergency Situations named the main mistakes when digging a car out of the snow

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations has published recommendations for safely freeing a car stuck in the snow. Rescuers emphasize that you need to start clearing not from the doors and windows, but from the exhaust pipe. If it is clogged with snow, exhaust gases can accumulate under the car and pose a threat to life.

After that, experts advise clearing the space in front of the drive wheels in the direction of travel, and not digging around the car in a circle. Then it is necessary to free the wheels themselves - from the side and from below, and also remove the snow under the bumper. It is the dense snow ridge under the bottom that most often prevents the car from moving. If the car is "sitting on its belly", it is important to create a gap under the bottom.

It is recommended to clean the windshield, mirrors and headlights after that to ensure visibility before starting to drive. Rescuers advise cleaning the roof of the car last.

If the car cannot move, the Ministry of Emergency Situations recommends completely freeing the drive wheels and forming a free space in front of them with a length of at least 30-50 cm. To improve traction, you can put rugs, sand, cardboard or branches under the wheels.

The rocking method is also allowed - smooth movement forward and backward without sudden accelerations. If you cannot get out on your own, rescuers advise seeking help or calling specialists to avoid breakdowns and injuries.
