General Motors patents airless wheels with a motor inside

The design reduces weight and simplifies the layout of electric vehicles

General Motors has filed a patent for airless wheels with the ability to place an electric motor inside the structure. The development could simplify the layout of electric vehicles and reduce the weight of components.

The document describes airless wheels that lack a sealed rim and inflatable tire. The design uses inner and outer rings connected by 3 to 8 support elements in the form of rods or beams. This arrangement eliminates the need for air pressure and reduces the weight of the wheel compared to classic solutions.

A key feature is the ability to integrate the electric motor and brake mechanism directly into the wheel. The inner ring has a central hole designed to accommodate part of the electric motor.

This solution simplifies the modular layout of the power plant and frees up space in the chassis.
