Amendments to the sanctions legislation have come into force in Lithuania, restricting the entry of vehicles with tanks containing more than 200 liters of fuel. The rule is valid until December 31, 2027.
When crossing the border, the actual volume of fuel is controlled. If the limit is exceeded, the excess is subject to confiscation, and the driver faces a fine. The requirement applies to vehicles entering from Russia and Belarus.
The initiator is the Customs Department of Lithuania. According to its assessment, "excess" fuel is often drained and sold, causing the budget to lose more than 2 million euros per month in unpaid taxes. The restriction is designed to close this scheme.
For owners of cars with enlarged tanks or additional reservoirs (typical for long trips and SUVs), logistics change: before entering, they will have to control the fuel level, otherwise, there is a risk of sanctions. For carriers, this adds operational costs and time at the border.
