BMW has begun preparations for an entirely new generation of the 1 Series, and for the brand, this will be a much more important model than it seems at first glance. The compact hatchback will be the first to transition to the Neue Klasse architecture – the very platform that is set to completely change BMW's future.
The main feature of Neue Klasse is not just support for electric vehicles. BMW promises radically more powerful electronics, centralized computing, constant OTA updates, and a new Panoramic iDrive operating system.
In fact, even the basic 1 Series will start receiving technologies previously associated with expensive premium models. For example, the signature Panoramic Vision – a wide projection system across the lower part of the windshield, replacing part of the traditional instrument panel.
At the same time, BMW does not intend to completely abandon internal combustion engines. According to insiders, the new 1 Series will retain hybrid gasoline versions alongside fully electric i1 modifications. This is an important nuance: BMW continues to bet on platform flexibility, while some competitors are already transitioning solely to battery architectures.
Visually, the model will become noticeably more minimalistic. Renders show a compact body with short overhangs, flush door handles, and a new interpretation of BMW's signature grille. The company is clearly trying to bring the design closer to the Neue Klasse concepts.
For BMW, this car is especially important in Europe. The compact premium hatchback segment is gradually shrinking under pressure from crossovers, and the new 1 Series must prove that a traditional hatchback can still be high-tech and profitable.
