FIAT has unveiled the first details of the Multiplay concept, which will debut at the Paris Motor Show on October 12. The name refers to two generations of Multipla, but the idea of the car has changed: instead of a compact minivan, the company offers a body capable of changing configuration.

The Multiplay should combine an open cargo area and pickup capabilities with the comfort and flexibility of an SUV. According to FIAT's design, a special mechanism allows switching from one configuration to another in just a few movements. How exactly it works and which body elements move, the company has not yet disclosed.
The connection with the original Multipla lies primarily in the idea of efficient space utilization. The 1950s Fiat 600 Multipla accommodated six people with a length of about 3.5 m, while the 1998 model offered six seats in two rows with a length of less than 4 m. The new Multiplay applies this principle to a different scenario: one car should serve for family trips and transporting large cargo.
FIAT has not yet announced the launch of Multiplay into production. The company calls the concept a source of ideas for future affordable family cars. Therefore, the technical specifications and price of the production version are currently unknown.
The premiere will show the main thing - how practical the transformation itself will be. If the mechanism really allows quickly transforming a passenger car into a small pickup, FIAT will get an unusual way to solve a problem that ordinary SUVs can only handle with a trunk or a trailer.
