The past year has unexpectedly become a window of opportunity for the new electric vehicle market in Russia. Against the background of a sharp increase in prices for cars with internal combustion engines and the actual departure of most brands, electric traction suddenly ceased to look like an exotic phenomenon. Local assembly of several models, as well as active "gray" and parallel imports, allowed buyers to choose without resorting to orders from abroad. However, the main question remains the same: has the market really become more accessible and closer to the mass buyer?
All new electric vehicles today are conditionally divided into "white" and "gray". The former includes models with vehicle type approval, official warranty and sales through certified dealers. There are few of these in Russia, but they exist. The key player remains Evolute, produced by Motorinvest in the Lipetsk region. The most affordable model is the Evolute i-Pro sedan with a 150 hp electric motor and a 53 kWh battery, claiming up to 420 km of range. The price is 2,990,000 rubles, which makes it the cheapest new electric vehicle in the country.
However, accessibility here is relative. The only configuration, the lack of heated seats, halogen optics and mediocre sound insulation clearly indicate a corporate audience - taxi, car sharing, rental. For a private owner, the Evolute i-Joy looks much more interesting - a compact crossover with a 176 hp engine, acceleration to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and a range of 405 km. The price is already higher - from 3,490,000 rubles, and the equipment essentially repeats the sedan, with all its compromises.
Voyah Free offers a completely different level - the most spectacular and technologically advanced electric vehicle of Russian assembly. Two electric motors with a total capacity of 490 hp, a 106 kWh battery, all-wheel drive and acceleration to "hundreds" in 4.7 seconds. It has everything: seat ventilation and massage, electronic assistants, night vision. But the price of 7,990,000 rubles seems excessive even by today's standards and sharply limits the circle of potential buyers.
Skywell ET5 seems to be a slightly more rational option. A mid-size crossover with front-wheel drive, a 204 hp engine and a 72 kWh battery offers up to 400 km of range according to WLTP. Acceleration is 7.9 seconds, maximum speed is 150 km/h. The cost starts from 4,480,000 rubles, which still leaves the model in a niche for wealthy customers. In the near future, Moskvich 3e and Fukang ES600 should be added to the official electric vehicles, but they are unlikely to become mass-produced.
The main mass of interesting offers is hidden in the "gray" segment. Here are Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Zeekr and BYD, often with minimal mileage and an age of 2–4 years. Prices range from 4.3 million rubles for Renault Megane E-Tech to 19.5 million rubles for Mercedes-Benz EQS AMG. There are also exotic options such as the Tesla Model S Plaid with acceleration of 2.1 seconds to 100 km/h or the seven-seater Volkswagen ID.6, which are often considered as a family alternative to minivans.
At the same time, the "gray" market has a downside: the lack of an official guarantee, dubious storage conditions and sales "on call". Government subsidies for the purchase of domestically assembled electric vehicles have not yet been resumed, import duties have been retained, and the charging infrastructure is still far from the required level. As a result, the new electric vehicle market in Moscow exists, but remains niche: there is a choice, the technologies are impressive, but the mass buyer is still scared off by the price, operational restrictions and uncertainty about the future.
