Volkswagen has announced the return of its iconic models in electric format. The first will be the compact hatchback ID.2, which will be named Polo, followed by electric versions of the Golf, Tiguan and Roc. The flagship SUV Touareg will also switch to electric drive and will be released as ID. Touareg in 2029, becoming the first production car of the concern on the new SSP platform. This architecture will replace the PPE used in the Porsche Macan Electric, Cayenne EV and Audi A6 e-tron. The current generation Touareg, based on the Porsche Cayenne platform, will be discontinued in 2026.
ID. Touareg is focused on the European market and will not appear in the USA, where Volkswagen is developing the Scout brand for local electric vehicles. Production of ID. Golf and ID. Roc has been postponed until 2030 due to high costs and redistribution of capacity. All models on SSP will receive electronics and software developed jointly with Rivian.
Volkswagen's new strategy emphasizes regional specialization: Scout for the USA, and ID. Touareg and other electric vehicles for Europe.
