The updated Lada Niva Travel will no longer have a proprietary snorkel - an air intake tube that used to be part of the optional equipment package. According to Dmitry Grunwald, chief engineer of the Niva project, in an interview with Autonews.ru, its installation is now technically impossible.
In the pre-styling version, the air filter was located on the left, where the snorkel was mounted. In the updated model, the filter was moved to the right, under the headlight, so the previous solution is simply not suitable.
In addition to structural changes, there are also engineering reasons. According to Grunwald, the snorkel creates additional resistance at the inlet, which makes the engine "breathe" harder. To compensate for this, it would be necessary to re-calibrate the engine and transmission, as well as undergo new certification for toxicity.
Thus, a modified snorkel for the new Niva Travel has yet to be developed, and it is not yet planned on the assembly line.
