German automaker BMW is recalling 5,000 X5 crossovers due to faulty inflatable airbags. The procedure concerns vehicles manufactured between 2000 and 2001.
These models are equipped with defective airbag modules manufactured by Takata.
Problematic Takata airbags have caused serious complications in more than 100 million vehicles worldwide.
The design flaw of the gas generator can lead to cracking, which, in turn, causes the ejection of metal fragments into the car's interior in the event of an accident. Large recall campaigns led to the financial collapse of the Japanese company Takata.
Since 2009, over 30 fatalities have been recorded worldwide due to the malfunction of these airbags.
