BYD Prepares New Electric Motors: Patents for Variable Flux Technology Revealed

New development promises to increase the efficiency of electric vehicles without increasing the battery

BYD has received four patents for an improved technology of synchronous electric motors with permanent magnets and variable magnetic flux. The documents were published by the China National Intellectual Property Administration after applications were filed in May 2024. The development belongs to the VF-PMSM class and aims to improve the energy efficiency of power plants in a wide range of speeds.

Unlike traditional engines with fixed magnetic flux, the new technology allows you to change the characteristics of the rotor depending on the driving mode. At low speeds, the magnetic flux is increased to provide high torque, and at high speeds, it is weakened, reducing losses and opposing forces. This approach allows you to maintain efficiency both in the urban cycle and when driving on the highway, as well as increase the range without increasing the battery capacity.

The patents describe various ways to adjust the magnetic flux — from moving elements in the rotor to axial and radial mechanisms for adjusting the magnetic conductive parts. In addition to these solutions, BYD filed more than 2,000 patents related to electric motors and drive systems in 2025. Although there is no confirmation of the commercial implementation of the new technology yet, the scale of patent activity indicates that the company is actively working on future power plants for electric vehicles and hybrids.
