UAZ Patriot Made Truly All-Wheel Drive

The company "Izh-Techno" has created an experimental permanent all-wheel drive kit for the Russian SUV

The company "Izh-Techno" has presented a development for the UAZ Patriot transmission, which converts the model from the classic part-time scheme to permanent all-wheel drive. At the moment, the novelty is in the status of an experimental project and is not offered for free sale.

The new unit uses a four-satellite interaxle differential on a spider. The shaft drives are equipped with double-row bearings, which, according to the developers, should reduce the level of vibrations. The downshift has a gear ratio of 3.3. The design also provides for differential locking. The transfer case housing, intermediate shaft, direct drive gear, rod and fork remain unchanged.

In its serial version, the UAZ Patriot is equipped with a part-time all-wheel drive transmission. In this scheme, the rear wheels are the driving wheels, and the front axle is connected forcibly.

The use of 4WD mode on the standard UAZ Patriot is recommended only when necessary. This is due to the fact that the part-time transmission does not have an interaxle differential. With all-wheel drive engaged, the car cannot correctly negotiate turns on hard surfaces, since there is no compensation for the difference in rotational speeds between the axles, while the "Izh-Techno" development just assumes the presence of an interaxle differential, which theoretically allows the use of all-wheel drive on a permanent basis without the restrictions characteristic of the standard scheme.
