Honda Accord Turns 50: The Sedan That Outlasted Crossovers and Sold 25 Million Units

The model remains a rare example of a classic body style that hasn't lost ground even in the SUV era

Honda officially announced the 50th anniversary of the Accord – the model debuted in 1976 and has since become one of the brand's most mass-produced cars. During this time, the company has sold over 25 million vehicles in 160 countries. For Honda, the Accord model became much more important than just a family sedan. It was instrumental in helping the Japanese company establish itself in the USA: in 1982, Honda was the first Japanese brand to start producing cars at an American factory, and the Accord was one of the key products.

Over half a century, the car has evolved from a compact hatchback to a technologically advanced sedan with a hybrid powertrain and built-in Google services. The current generation features a digital instrument panel, a multimedia system with a 12.3-inch screen, Google Built-In, and the Honda SENSING 360+ suite of assistants.

Paradoxically, the Accord's anniversary coincides with a difficult period for the sedan segment. While the market is massively shifting towards crossovers, Honda continues to develop the model. Moreover, the Accord remains one of the best-selling passenger cars in the USA over the past decades.

For the anniversary, the company prepared a special exhibition of historical models in Japan, collectible accessories, and a series of videos about the Accord's development. However, Honda has not yet introduced any limited editions of the car – although fans of the model expected a special modification for the 50th anniversary.

The history of the Accord shows a rare trend for the modern market: despite declining interest in classic sedans, some models continue to retain an audience due to reliability, hybrid technologies, and a familiar format without compromises in handling.
