Audi brings back a 1000-hp V8 supercar: why the Nuvolari challenges the electric car era

The company's new flagship features a hybrid powertrain with almost 1000 hp, Formula 1 technologies, and a limited run of just 499 units

Audi unexpectedly unveiled the new Nuvolari supercar — the first such model since the R8 ceased production. However, instead of a fully electric powertrain, the company opted for a hybrid V8, creating the most powerful production car in its history.

At the heart of the new model is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, working in conjunction with three electric motors. The combined output reaches 987 hp (1001 PS), allowing it to accelerate to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds and reach speeds over 350 km/h. In terms of power, the Audi Nuvolari even surpasses the related Lamborghini Temerario, with which it shares its powertrain architecture.

Engineers paid special attention to technology. The supercar features a full carbon fiber body, active aerodynamics with a DRS system inspired by Formula 1, and a new Audi Space Frame. Pilots from the Audi Formula 1 factory team participated in the aerodynamic development.

The project's philosophy is no less interesting. Just a few years ago, Audi spoke of large-scale electrification of its model range, but the Nuvolari demonstrates a different approach. The company decided to retain the internal combustion engine in the most emotional market segment, complementing it with electric technologies to improve efficiency and dynamics.

The car is named after the legendary racer Tazio Nuvolari and will be released in a limited edition of just 499 units. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.
