Most modern cars change beyond recognition within one or two generations. Manufacturers switch to new platforms, add more and more electronic systems, and focus on digital technologies. Against this backdrop, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70 looks like a true exception. This SUV first debuted in 1984, but more than four decades later, it not only remains in production but also continues to receive new versions.
Further proof of this was the presentation of several modifications of the legendary "seventy series," among which a rare short-wheelbase three-door version attracted particular attention.
An SUV that has barely changed in 40 years
The history of the Land Cruiser 70 is unique in the modern automotive industry. Over the years of production, the car has been repeatedly modernized, but the changes have been evolutionary. The model received more modern engines, an updated interior, and improved safety systems, but its basic design has remained virtually unchanged.
It is still a classic body-on-frame SUV with solid axles, full-time four-wheel drive, and a large margin of safety.
Such an approach is becoming increasingly rare today. Many manufacturers have switched to unibody construction, independent suspension, and complex electronics, while Toyota has retained a design valued by those who regularly work far from asphalt.
That's why the Land Cruiser 70 is still used by:
- farms;
- geological exploration companies;
- rescue services;
- military units;
- travelers and expedition teams.
Return of the short-wheelbase version
The main novelty was the three-door modification with a short wheelbase (SWB).
Such vehicles were always produced in limited batches and were relatively rare even in traditional Land Cruiser 70 markets.
The presentation was attended by Toyota Racing W2RC team driver and Dakar Rally participant Takamoto Miura, as well as chief project engineer Masaya Uchiyama. This choice is not accidental: extreme operating conditions best demonstrate the capabilities of a classic SUV.
The shortened wheelbase improves off-road geometry. Thanks to its shorter body length, the car more easily overcomes:
- steep ascents;
- deep gullies;
- rocky sections;
- narrow forest roads.
In addition, the compact dimensions significantly simplify maneuvering both off-road and in the city.
Toyota has prepared several versions
The company presented several variants of the new modification, aimed at different buyers.
The most utilitarian version received a black body and maximum basic equipment. Such a car is primarily intended for commercial operation.
The equipment list includes:
- steel wheels;
- manual windows;
- vinyl interior trim;
- a factory-installed snorkel for overcoming water obstacles and working in dusty conditions.
The more expensive version is painted in sand color and is aimed not only at work but also at long journeys.
It features:
- extended wheel arches;
- improved interior trim;
- power windows;
- multimedia system;
- combined leather and suede trim.
Convertible for ranch work
The most unusual modification was the open-top version with a soft roof.
The main feature of the car was a fully folding windshield that can be laid directly on the hood.
At first glance, such a solution seems unusual, but it has a very practical purpose. According to Carscoops, this layout is primarily designed for ranch owners and cowboys. With the windshield folded, nothing prevents the use of a lasso directly while driving.
Additionally, the car received:
- a protective roll cage;
- side seats in the cargo area;
- capacity for up to six or seven people.
Today, such SUVs have practically disappeared from the world market, so the open-top version already looks like a real rarity.
More compact than it seems
Despite its impressive appearance, the short-wheelbase Land Cruiser 70 turned out to be quite compact.
Its wheelbase is only 2310 mm.
For comparison:
- it is only 60 mm longer than the Suzuki Jimny;
- only 120 mm shorter than the urban Toyota Aygo X.
Despite such small dimensions, the SUV retains a strong ladder frame construction and a high load capacity.
Design without compromises
The main advantage of the model has remained unchanged for many years.
The car is based on a powerful ladder frame, and rigid solid axles are used at the front and rear. The front suspension is coil-sprung, while the rear retains time-tested leaf springs.
For a modern city car, this scheme might seem outdated, but it is precisely what ensures high reliability when operating in harsh conditions.
Therefore, the Land Cruiser 70 continues to be used:
- in quarries;
- at mining enterprises;
- in deserts;
- in remote areas of Africa;
- in Australia;
- in the Middle East.
The ability to travel hundreds of thousands of kilometers without serious breakdowns remains one of the main reasons for the model's popularity.
Two engines to choose from
Toyota offers two well-known power units.
The first is a naturally aspirated inline six-cylinder diesel engine with a volume of 4.2 liters.
Its power is 129 hp. By modern standards, this figure seems modest, but the engine is known for its long service life, simple design, and ability to run even on low-quality fuel. It is paired with a five-speed manual transmission.
An alternative is a 4.0-liter V6 gasoline engine, developing 228 hp. It is equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission.
All versions use a full-time four-wheel drive system designed for operation in harsh conditions.
Where the new product will be sold
According to chief project engineer Masaya Uchiyama, about 90% of short-wheelbase vehicles are intended for Middle Eastern countries.
The remaining cars are planned to be supplied to selected markets in South America and Asia.
For now, Toyota does not intend to organize mass sales of this version in Japan, but high customer interest does not completely rule out such a possibility in the future.
How much does the Land Cruiser 70 cost?
In the United Arab Emirates, the price of a three-door Land Cruiser 70 starts from 177,900 dirhams.
At the exchange rate at the end of July 2026, this amounts to approximately 3.78 million rubles.
At the same time, the short-wheelbase version turned out to be about 10 thousand dirhams cheaper than the five-door modification.
Why demand persists
At first glance, it might seem that a car with a forty-year-old design should have long given way to more modern models. However, simplicity remains the main advantage of the Land Cruiser 70.
While many modern SUVs are becoming increasingly complex and demanding to maintain, the "seventy series" maintains its reputation as a car that can be repaired even far from civilization.
That's why it continues to be bought by:
- expedition companies;
- farms;
- rescue services;
- mining enterprises;
- owners who need a reliable work tool, not a crossover with a lot of electronics.
Over decades of operation, the Land Cruiser 70 has earned a reputation as one of the most durable SUVs in the world. Many cars travel more than 500 thousand kilometers without major overhauls, and with timely maintenance, some individual units even exceed the million-kilometer mark.
Against the backdrop of rapid digitalization in the automotive industry, Toyota continues to adhere to a different strategy. Instead of a radical change in concept, the company develops a time-tested design that remains in demand where reliability, maintainability, and the ability to confidently move off-road are still considered the main qualities of a car.
