The technology is called Exit Warning and will debut on the new generation Neue Klasse cars, the first of which will be the iX3. BMW has included an extended set of active safety systems as standard equipment in several upcoming models.

The operating principle is quite simple. Short-wave sensors monitor the space next to a parked car. If the system detects an approaching cyclist, pedestrian, or other vehicle and assesses the situation as dangerous, the electronic lock temporarily prevents the door from opening.

This is about protection against a situation where the driver or passenger suddenly flings open the door right in front of a cyclist. Conventional Exit Warning systems in such cases are limited to an audible or visual warning. BMW went further and intervened directly in the door opening mechanism.

However, an exception is provided. An emergency handle allows the door to be opened forcibly, so the system does not create an absolute blockage. In normal mode, the car simply delays opening until the danger disappears.

Exit Warning is just one part of the new BMW Symbiotic Drive complex. It uses data from cameras and sensors, and also analyzes driver actions so that active assistants intervene only when truly necessary. BMW has simultaneously modernized lane keeping and emergency steering: the car can independently bypass an unexpectedly appearing obstacle, trying to stay within its lane.

The updated automatic emergency braking system has also learned to better recognize animals. In addition, BMW is preparing a function that, if the driver loses the ability to control the car, will be able to stop the car and call emergency services. A separate system will prevent accidental pressing of the accelerator pedal instead of the brake.
