The idea of an off-road Mustang emerged several years ago when a Mustang Raptor version was discussed. Now the project has a different name – Baja. According to Automotive News, Ford has shown the concept of such a car to dealers, although the company has not yet announced an official decision to launch it into production.

If the Mustang Baja truly makes it to production, it will be a very unusual version of the iconic coupe. Instead of a typical low-slung sports car, Ford could create a vehicle with increased ground clearance, a wider track, all-terrain tires, and reinforced underbody protection.

A significant suspension overhaul is also expected. One possible solution mentioned is Fox Live Valve shock absorbers with increased travel. The ground clearance could increase by approximately 5–7.5 cm. This design would allow the Mustang not just to leave the asphalt, but to move quickly over gravel and broken roads.

The powertrain has not yet been officially confirmed. However, one of the most likely options is the 5.2-liter supercharged V8 from the Mustang Dark Horse SC, where it produces 795 hp. If Ford indeed installs this engine in the Baja, the car will become one of the most powerful members of the Mustang family.

At the same time, a manual gearbox is unlikely. For a powerful all-wheel-drive vehicle designed for driving on loose surfaces, an automatic transmission is a more logical choice. Furthermore, the current 5.2-liter V8 is not offered with a manual transmission.

All-wheel drive also seems almost mandatory. A regular Mustang transmits power only to the rear wheels, whereas the Baja must maintain traction on gravel, sand, and other challenging surfaces.

For now, the Mustang Baja remains a project without officially announced production status. But the fact that Ford has already shown the car to dealers indicates a more serious stage of development than mere design fantasies.
