Volkswagen continues to develop its passenger car lineup, despite the global rise in popularity of crossovers. In the Chinese market, the company introduced the new ID. Era 5S sedan, which combines modern design and a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a claimed range of up to 2000 km.
The model was developed by the SAIC Volkswagen joint venture and is the second vehicle in the ID. Era family after the ID. Era 9X crossover. The new model is aimed exclusively at the Chinese market, where competition among high-tech sedans remains one of the highest in the world.
Outwardly, the ID. Era 5S is made in the current Volkswagen corporate style. The car received narrow LED headlights, a luminous strip across the entire width of the front, and semi-recessed door handles. This solution differs from the fully hidden handles, which have recently been a subject of discussion in China due to potential safety concerns.
The interior is designed in a minimalist style. The cabin features a large freestanding multimedia system display, a two-spoke steering wheel, and ambient contour lighting. Buyers will be offered light and dark color schemes for the interior.
The main technical feature is the plug-in hybrid. The powertrain combines a 1.5-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor with 174 hp. According to the manufacturer, the car can travel up to 160 km purely on electric power, and the total range reaches 2000 km according to the Chinese CLTC cycle. It should be noted that this test standard traditionally shows more optimistic results compared to the American EPA cycle.
Although the ID. Era 5S is not planned for other markets, the model demonstrates Volkswagen's development direction in China. The success of such vehicles could influence the company's future global projects.
Meanwhile, in North America, Volkswagen continues to adhere to a different strategy. There, the only sedan of the brand remains the Jetta, which retains a more traditional design and construction. After the 2026 model year, the Jetta GLI version will also lose its manual transmission, and the only transmission will be the seven-speed DSG robotic gearbox.
