Fake Reviews: Scheme to Discredit Car Brands Uncovered in China

Rumors of problems with Nio and Xiaomi cars turned out to be false

A large-scale operation against unscrupulous auto bloggers has been carried out in China. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, together with the Cyberspace Administration and other departments, fought against false information on the Internet for three months. The focus was on illegal speculation, defamation, and fake reviews that damage the reputation of automakers. As a result, a group of bloggers who spread unreliable reviews for money were detained.

The investigation revealed that rumors of problems with Nio and Xiaomi cars, such as spontaneous combustion or door malfunctions after accidents, turned out to be false. These messages, which caused a stir online, were part of a paid campaign. CCTV's financial channel reported that such fakes were actively spread to discredit brands.

Journalists found out that one auto blogger with an audience of 600,000 subscribers received from 2,500 to 5,300 dollars for short videos with fake reviews. The authorities demanded that online platforms strengthen content control, including using artificial intelligence technologies, to ensure the purity of the information environment in the automotive industry.
