A rare 2008 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster has appeared on the online auction Bring a Trailer. The roadster, created during the collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, has only driven about 6,000 miles (approximately 9,650 km) and is preserved in almost collectible condition.
The SLR McLaren emerged from the partnership between the two companies, which brought the McLaren team two Formula 1 championship titles with Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999. In the road car, engineers tried to combine the luxury of classic Mercedes-Benz SL series coupes with motorsport technologies.
The model is based on a carbon fiber monocoque, but the supercar cannot be called lightweight – its mass is about 1720 kg. The focus here is not on record lightness, but on combining high speed, stability, and comfort when driving at high speeds.
Under the long hood is a hand-assembled 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with two intercoolers and a dry-sump lubrication system. The engine develops 617 hp, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. Despite the unusual choice of transmission for a supercar of that time, the SLR accelerated to high speeds with impressive ease, and covered a quarter mile in approximately 11.5 seconds.
A special feature of the Roadster version was good sound insulation. During the presentation, Mercedes-Benz claimed that passengers could talk calmly in the cabin even at speeds over 200 km/h without raising their voices. At the same time, the open roof allows full enjoyment of the characteristic sound of the supercharged V8.
The exhibited example is painted in silver with a red leather interior and a soft top. The car also retained its signature butterfly doors, which became one of the most recognizable details of the model.
Bidding closes on August 7. Given the low mileage and the status of one of the most iconic joint developments of Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, the car may attract the attention of collectors from around the world.
Supercars at auction: when rarity matters more than performance
The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is not the only supercar whose collectible value is determined primarily by its rarity and historical context, rather than just its technical specifications. A similar situation applies to other iconic cars put up for auction.
For example, the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign — one of 19 built examples — was also put up for auction almost new: the car had only driven 221 kilometers. Its engine was boosted to 720 hp, and the body features exposed carbon fiber; despite this, its value has hardly increased relative to its original price of about one million dollars.
In the Mercedes-Benz segment, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was sold in 2022 at a private RM Sotheby's auction for 143 million dollars — an absolute record in automotive auction history. This car, like the SLR McLaren, combined the brand's racing heritage with the exclusivity of a road-going version.
As for the SL line itself, the idea of combining sporty character with comfort dates back to the 1963 Mercedes-Benz W113 Pagoda — a model that was one of the first in its class to offer buyers an automatic transmission and power steering without sacrificing handling.
