After numerous rumors and leaks, Toyota has finally officially unveiled the new Land Cruiser FJ — a compact frame SUV inspired by the legendary Land Cruiser models of past decades. The new model combines retro design, time-tested construction, and modern technical equipment, while maintaining a true off-road essence.
The model is built on a modified IMV platform, known from the Hilux pickup and Fortuner SUV. Sales of the Land Cruiser FJ will start in mid-2026 in selected markets. Despite the general interest, Toyota has already confirmed that the model will not appear in the United States.
Design in the spirit of classic Land Cruisers
At first glance, the FJ evokes nostalgia for the iconic SUVs of the 70s–80s. Short overhangs, vertical body panels, and characteristic extended arches emphasize the off-road nature of the car. The front end is offered in two versions: one with round headlights in the style of early Land Cruisers, the other with rectangular optics and C-shaped LED daytime running lights.
The radiator grille is concise and decorated with the inscription "Toyota". The bumpers are made of durable plastic and are easily replaceable: the front and rear corner elements are made removable to simplify the repair of off-road consequences.
On the sides, the FJ demonstrates simple but expressive forms with large fenders and wide glazing. The rear door carries a spare wheel, which creates a classic off-road silhouette, although it somewhat impairs visibility. At the rear, a durable bumper and C-shaped lights stand out.
Toyota will also offer numerous accessories: power steps, a snorkel air intake, an ARB expedition trunk, and external MOLLE panels for attaching equipment, including those installed inside the tailgate.
Compact dimensions, but impressive presence
The dimensions of the Land Cruiser FJ are 4575 mm in length, 1855 mm in width, and 1960 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2580 mm. Thus, the new model is slightly longer than the Corolla Cross, but significantly shorter than the classic Land Cruiser. These proportions make it more maneuverable and convenient for urban conditions while maintaining off-road potential.
Interior: functionality and simplicity
The interior of the Land Cruiser FJ is designed in a spirit of practicality, where everything is subject to reliability and convenience. The central place is occupied by a digital instrument panel, and next to it is a wide screen of the multimedia system. A separate climate control unit and large switches emphasize the utilitarian nature of the car.
The plastic trim is made in an intentionally simple, "working" style, and the massive gear lever and buttons for controlling off-road modes resemble classic Land Cruisers. The second row is compact, but longitudinal adjustment of the seats is assumed.
The standard equipment will include the Toyota Safety Sense safety system with adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking.
Engine and transmission
Under the hood is a time-tested 2.7-liter gasoline engine of the 2TR-FE series, developing 161 hp and 246 N·m of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and a part-time all-wheel drive system.
This combination does not make the FJ a racing car, but guarantees reliability and ease of maintenance — two qualities that Toyota SUVs are traditionally valued for.
Thanks to reinforced body elements and additional struts, the IMV platform will provide better rigidity and stability off-road. The manufacturer emphasizes that the approach and departure angles, as well as the suspension articulation, have been refined taking into account real tests on rough terrain.

The spirit of classics in a modern format
Land Cruiser FJ is Toyota's attempt to bring the spirit of adventure back in a more compact, affordable, and playful format. It does not pretend to replace the older Land Cruisers, but rather becomes their younger brother.
Although the model will not appear in the United States, interest in it in developing markets, including Asia and the Middle East, is expected to be huge.
