Foton Tunland V7: Chinese Pickup with Ford Ambitions and Premium Price

A large diesel-hybrid from China tries to combine brutality, comfort, and a high price

The Chinese auto industry is confidently mastering the pickup segment, and now the new Foton Tunland V7 has joined the Great Wall, JAC, Sollers, and Changan models. The car is not just large and expensive — it is trying to play in the same league as the Ford Ranger and even the F-150, flaunting a leather interior, a large display, and solid equipment. But how justified are the ambitions and 5.25 million rubles requested for the Chinese "worker"?

Tunland V7 has become the new face of the Foton brand, long familiar to Russians for its utilitarian pickups and vans. The previous Tunlands were simple workhorses, but the current V7 (and the almost identical V9) is an attempt to step into the premium segment. In terms of style, the novelty frankly copies the Ford F-150 — a huge radiator grille, vertical LED headlights, massive shapes. At the same time, the dimensions are smaller than the American original: 5617 mm in length, 2090 mm in width and 1955 mm in height with a wheelbase of 3355 mm.

Despite its impressive proportions, the payload is only 725 kg. The body is protected by a polymer coating, there are four lashing brackets, but that's where the practicality ends. Competitors — like the Huanghai N7 — have more accessories: canopies, boxes, выдвижные platforms. Foton only offers a mechanical roller shutter for 180 thousand rubles and a tow bar for a trailer up to 750 kg.

Inside — an attempt to create "Chinese premium". The interior is decorated with soft materials and leather, there are "wood-like" inserts and a large center console. The instrument panel is digital, with a diagonal of 12.3 inches, and the multimedia screen is 14.6 inches. The menu is simple, but the interface is partially in English, and the response to pressing is not ideal. Climate control, fortunately, with classic knobs, not touch controls.

The front seats are electrically adjustable, with heating, lumbar support and ventilation. There is plenty of space in the second row, but the fit is almost vertical, and the sofa is not adjustable. White leather looks impressive, but in a pickup it will quickly lose its marketable appearance.

The main feature of the Tunland V7 is the diesel-hybrid power plant. Under the hood is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel with 159 hp and 410 N·m, which is assisted by a 48-volt starter-generator. The electric superstructure improves response and allows you to add up to 60 N·m during acceleration, as well as save fuel due to the "start-stop" system. The engine works in tandem with an 8-speed ZF automatic — a rarity for Chinese pickups. Gears shift smoothly, although slight jerks are possible during active acceleration.

In motion, the Tunland V7 surprises with its smoothness. The suspension is energy-intensive, the rear axle does not "jump" on bumps, and the steering wheel is heavy, but predictable. On the highway, the pickup goes confidently, the rolls in turns are moderate, although there is not enough steering information. Without load, the car is soft, and with load it becomes even more comfortable.

The Extreme configuration is the only one for Russia. It includes six airbags, LED optics, a circular view system, keyless entry, adaptive cruise control, climate with two zones, wireless charging, windshield heating, Apple CarPlay, blind spot sensors and a frontal collision prevention system.

Nevertheless, at 5.25 million rubles, the Tunland V7 is difficult to call a rational choice. For this money, you can buy a more well-known Great Wall Poer or Changan Hunter Plus with comparable capabilities and better availability of spare parts. Foton looks impressive and comfortable, but as a working tool it is inferior to competitors. Its element is not a construction site or a farm, but a country house and a weekend track, where you can enjoy the diesel growl and powerful appearance, as if spied on by Ford.
