Russian Terranica Presents a Unique Vehicle Capable of Revolutionizing Off-Roading

Terranica Expedition is not a futuristic mockup or a show car, but a pre-production hybrid amphibious vehicle preparing for launch in 2026. The vehicle, created by engineers in the Moscow region, has already caused a stir online and received about 60 pre-orders, including applications from the USA and Canada. Despite logistical difficulties and sanctions, foreign customers are willing to wait: the first copies will be assembled manually for nine months, and after reaching the rhythm - six months for each car. The planned circulation is only 30 units per year.

Terranica has been around for three decades and has worked with the legendary engineer Gennady Khainov, the author of the experimental cars "Laura" and "Okhta". Now the company is fully focused on the domestic base, has its own factory in the Moscow region and the status of a resident of "Skolkovo". Expedition became the result of almost two years of development - from drawings to a full-fledged prototype, which has already received the award for the best industrial design of 2025.

The main feature of the model is a scalable tracked amphibious platform with a number of patented solutions. The basis of the design is a sealed welded boat hull with an aluminum frame and displacement sponsons on the sides. They increase stability afloat and reduce drive losses. The tracks are made of rubber-fabric tape with composite lugs, and many elements, including the rocker arms, are made of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene. This made it possible to significantly reduce weight and improve seaworthiness.

The suspension is coilover type with independent shock absorbers on each roller, which provides a smooth ride and stability on any surface. In the future, the chassis will be modernized: twin struts, separators for cleaning the propulsion unit and a new roller design that reduces vibration and noise will appear.

The power plant is a series hybrid. A 1.5-liter Suzuki gasoline engine is installed in the stern, operating exclusively on a generator. It powers a 24 kWh lithium-ion battery and two 30 kW electric motors (82 hp peak) located in the front. The motors are connected to the drive wheels through planetary gearboxes, and the entire system has IP67 moisture protection. The hybrid complex provides autonomy up to 1000 km and can operate as a mobile power plant, delivering up to 40 kW to external consumers.

Terranica Expedition is capable of moving silently on pure electric traction for up to two hours, covering 20–25 km on difficult terrain. The electric drive provides instant response and 450 N·m of torque from zero revolutions. At the same time, the system is easy to maintain: a minimum of mechanical components, quick replacement of body modules and easy diagnostics make operation convenient even for non-professional owners.

Special attention is paid to design and comfort. The body, created in collaboration with the Cardi studio from the Moscow Polytechnic University, resembles a Mars rover from science fiction films: gull-wing doors, panoramic glazing and a transforming interior with leather seats, heating, ventilation and a sleep function. The seats rotate 180 degrees, forming a cozy cabin, and if necessary, turn into a sleeping place. The interior is decorated using serial elements from Geely and Haval, but the central place is occupied by the original steering wheel with height adjustment and a digital instrument panel.

Driving the Expedition creates a surreal feeling: silence, smoothness and ease of response. Electronic steering without mechanical connection makes the all-terrain vehicle obedient to literally one finger. At the same time, the 2.5-ton vehicle can accelerate to 80 km/h (in production versions it will be limited to 60 km/h), and the specific pressure on the ground is only 8 g/cm² — like a snowmobile. Therefore, Expedition is able to move through swamps, tundra and loose snow without destroying the soil.

The developers plan to improve the steering wheel, add feedback, install more powerful 50 kW electric motors and bring the speed afloat to 10 km/h due to hydrodynamic grilles. In the future, versions with utilitarian bodies will appear - for rescuers, geologists, gas workers and tourist expeditions.

The price of the all-terrain vehicle will be from 14 million rubles, and the top version with the Cardi interior will be about 18 million.
