Daimler Truck has completed the first year of testing for the Mercedes-Benz GenH2 hydrogen trucks, during which five prototypes covered over 225,000 kilometers in real-world conditions in Germany. The tests were conducted at various companies with gross combination weights ranging from 16 to 34 tons, where the average consumption of liquid hydrogen ranged from 5.6 to 8 kg per 100 km depending on the load. Refueling took place at stations in Wörth am Rhein and the Duisburg area, using 285 refills and approximately 15 tons of hydrogen, providing a range of over 1000 km in 15 minutes.
Compared to diesel counterparts, the GenH2 demonstrates environmental advantages: for a similar mileage, a 25.6-ton diesel truck would require about 58 tons of fuel with emissions of 154 tons of CO2, while hydrogen trucks emit only water vapor. The fuel cells, developed by the joint venture between Daimler Truck and Volvo Group under the Cellcentric brand, have shown reliability, and customers note the ease of operation, comparable to diesel trucks.
From the fourth quarter of 2025, the second phase of testing will begin with the participation of the same prototypes and five new customers to evaluate performance in different conditions. Daimler Truck plans to prepare the trucks for series production, starting with the production of 100 new units by the end of 2026, which will be a step towards an alternative to diesel technologies.
