Russia Launches First Full-Cycle Battery Gigafactory

Rosatom Starts Industrial Production

The first gigafactory for energy storage has been put into pilot operation in Russia. The production was launched in the city of Neman, Kaliningrad Region, and belongs to Rosatom's fuel division, TVEL. This is the first and currently the only industrial enterprise in the country for the production of full-cycle lithium-ion batteries, from cells to finished batteries.

The design capacity of the gigafactory is 4 GWh per year, which is equivalent to the production of about 1.5 million charging modules or up to 50 thousand traction batteries for electric vehicles. According to estimates, by 2030, the energy storage market in Russia may grow to 20–30 GWh, and the new plant should play a key role in the formation of this industry. The plant has installed more than 3 thousand units of equipment, the length of technological lines reaches 2.5 km, and the level of automation is about 90%, which allows producing one battery cell per second.

The project was implemented with active state support: the gigafactory received the status of a resident of a special economic zone, as well as direct subsidies, preferential loans and a special investment contract. The Industrial Development Fund allocated 5 billion rubles under the "Auto Components" program, and another 5 billion rubles were provided by the government of the Kaliningrad Region. In parallel, Rosatom is already building a second similar gigafactory in New Moscow with a capacity of 4 GWh, which is scheduled to be commissioned in 2026.
