St. Petersburg taxi drivers-migrants may be left without work

About 10 thousand migrants risk losing their jobs

In St. Petersburg, thousands of taxi drivers may be left without work due to the ban for citizens of foreign countries to work in the field of passenger transportation and delivery. According to Tatyana Morozkova, Deputy Head of the Labor Committee, about 10 thousand migrants are at risk of losing their jobs. This decision of the local authorities is aimed at changing the employment structure in the city, where a significant part of transportation was previously provided by foreign labor.

In 2024, approximately 200 thousand people received patents for labor activity in the city, of which 1.6% were employed in taxis, and 3.4% in delivery services. However, Morozkova noted that some taxi drivers and couriers work under patents for auxiliary workers, which makes it difficult to accurately count their number. According to her, employers often use alternative categories for hiring, which complicates monitoring compliance with the new rules.

It is expected that the ban will not negatively affect the city's economy, but, on the contrary, will increase the level of security. Vacancies in the delivery sector may be of interest to schoolchildren and students as an opportunity to earn extra money. This decision may change the labor market, stimulating the attraction of local residents to employment in the transport industry.
